X-Files-11-12-25-Solar-Storms-And-Wars

If this was posted a day or two late, it was because I was denied access to my own site – but a straight 8 hours of effort got us back on line.

The first thing I want to say is a BIG thank you for recent donations, including those by mail. You’ve all helped immensely, especially being able to cover serious overheads at this time of year.

And those who are subscribed at the recurring monthly tier levels (only $5 and $10) are the backbone when it comes to keeping the newsletter and blog up and running. (So if you are among the 90% of subscribers who are on the free level, you’re certainly welcome…but you just might also consider upgrading to one of the tier levels).

But now, let’s get on with it.

I had intended to create a video, and have the clips in place and ready for editing. However, that’s at least an 8hr project, so this post will rely on text and images about recent current events – the lead story being about the way our planet is being hammered by solar storms.

Massive Coronal Mass Ejections

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS ARE LIKELY TODAY: Earth’s magnetic field is reverberating from three potent CME strikes in past 48 hours. This is causing geomagnetic storms and widespread auroras. Currently, storm levels are bouncing between category G1 (Minor) and G3 (Strong) as solar wind blows around Earth faster than 700 km/s. NOAA forecasters say there is also a lingering chance of severe G4-class storms on Nov. 13th. Get your aurora alerts here.

AURORAS IN UNUSUAL PLACES: Most photos of Northern Lights have things like igloos and Arctic reindeer in the foreground. On Nov. 11th, the scenery changed to palm trees, Saguaro cacti and tropical beaches. Here is a sampling of photos from the severe geomagnetic storm of Veterans Day 2025:

Clockwise from the top, we have auroras in New Port Richie, Florida (latitude +28N); Tucson, Arizona (+32N); and Usulutan, El Salvador (+13N). All were visible with the naked eye. These are very low latitudes for such a display.

Almost all of North America witnessed the light show, which stretched from inside the Arctic Circle to the doorstep of the equator. Auroras were seen in all 50 US states, including Hawaii.

The storm was caused by two CMEs, which struck Earth in quick succession during the late hours of Nov. 11th. The CMEs were crowded so close together, they had the characteristics of a Cannibal CME–that is, strong internal magnetic fields and shock waves capable of sparking intense geomagnetic activity.

CMEs can disrupt gps data, so computer-operated tractors can lose track of where they should be going. But it’s a pretty picture.

IT’S NOT OVER YET

I don’t know whether the CMEs that have hit Earth in the last few days are really a warmup for something bigger on Nov 17, but there has been plenty of information out there over the years about the possibility of an intense solar storm taking down the Internet, as well as the power grid. A lot of people have been wise enough to be prepared for such a possibility. It’s all a matter of personal choice.

To Believe, or Not to Believe

One of our visitors last Sunday said something rather profound – at least, in my opinion – she said she neither believes nor disbelieves anything.

It was a pleasant surprise to hear someone say what has for years been my own approach to the hundreds of opinions about so many issues on the Internet.

Her approach, as is mine, is that the subject matter, whatever it might be, is just information.

Information is what we are seemingly swamped with these days, and judging by the replies to many posts, many people are triggered by their feelings, as if feelings determine whether they believe or don’t believe someone else’s opinion or the information that’s being presented. .

My job as a reporter, is to provide information, such as this idea that the power grid could be taken out by a solar storm, or that the world could be plunged into 12 days of darkness, or perhaps 10 days of light. I for one neither believe nor disbelieve.

Instead, in light of that information, I can “wait and see” – and do nothing.

Or I can choose to prepare for such a possibility.

Or I could say, “there’s always more to the story,” evaluate the information, consider my choices, then make a decision as to what I will, or will not do with that new knowledge.

Here’s the thing. We were all born with the birthright of freedom of choice. Therefore, there’s no-one else to blame for the decisions we make and the consequences thereof.

Memorial Day

I know it’s late, but this post by General Flynn really caught my eye.
